CREATING ASSIGNMENTS

What's the difference between "Assignments" and "Practice"?

The learner dashboard is split into Assignments and Practice, and the Educator Portal is similarly split between Assignment Performance and Practice Performance. When starting out, all cases are available to learners in the Practice section for them to do on their own. When cases are assigned, they are no longer available in the Practice section and learners can only access them when the assignment becomes available. Practice cases can be repeated as much as students like, but the Assignment Performance only records a learner's first time through the case.

How do I assign cases to my learners?

Go to Create Assignments in the Educator Portal. Give the assignment a name and select a due date and time. Next, choose the cases you want, using the filters on the left as needed to identify the best cases for your needs. Please note that once you have assigned the case(s) they will no longer be available for your learners to use in the practice library. If you don't specify a start date, then the assignment will show up immediately on their dashboard. Finally, assign the case to a cohort of students, to individual students, or both. Review your choices and then hit submit.

STUDENT PERFORMANCE

How does NEJM Healer help assess learner performance?

NEJM Healer includes multiple performance metrics, including:

  • lead diagnostic accuracy (Did the learner arrive at the correct final lead diagnosis?) and differential diagnostic accuracy (Did the learner include the necessary diseases on their differential as compared with expert consensus?)
  • illness script concordance (Was the learner able to build an accurate illness script for each of their three lead diagnoses?)
  • problem representation concordance (Was the learner able to build effective problem representations measured by informed self-assessment through comparison with expert PRs?)
  • management plan concordance (Was the learner able to build an effective and comprehensive management plan measured by informed self-assessment through comparison with expert management plan?)

Together, these metrics create an extensive view of both the learner's clinical reasoning skills and their knowledge.

How can I review a learner’s performance in detail?

You may view learner performance in two ways:

1. Go to Assignment Performance and then Choose by Learner. Find the learner that you want and then export their data as a detailed .csv file.

2. Go to Learners & Cohorts, select All Learners and click the Impersonate button to the left of the learner's name. This will log you in as that learner. Click on Assignments and select the case you want to look at from the list of completed assignments. This will take you to a printable version of the student's performance report.

How do you address premature closure on the cases?

We address premature closure by assessing the learner’s differential diagnosis at each stage of the clinical encounter and encouraging the learner to maintain a broad view of potential diseases based on the available data about the patient.

REPORTING

What type of reporting is there on the cases?

NEJM Healer provides reporting on both learners’ performance and progress to help you track individual learners and cohorts at each stage of a case and for the case as a whole. These reporting data present you with powerful insights into a learners’ clinical reasoning profile according to both objective and self-assessed measures.

Objective Measurements:

  • Lead diagnosis accuracy
  • Differential diagnostic accuracy
  • Illness script concordance

Informed Self-Assessments:

  • Problem representation concordance
  • Management plan concordance

Can we export our own reports?

We have detailed reports for faculty by student and by assignment available for export in the Educator Portal.

CASE LIBRARY

How do I see what cases are currently available?

You can view a complete list of the cases by clicking on the Case Library section of the Educator Portal. Filters allow you to drill down further by organ system, case difficulty, patient age, disease acuity, and other factors.

How often are new cases being added?

New cases are being added frequently (approximately monthly). See a list of all cases by clicking on the Case Library section of the Educator Portal.

How long does it take to do a case?

Each case takes 15-30 minutes on average depending in part on whether time is spent using the information in the Knowledge Center.

LEARNERS & COHORTS

I have new learners to onboard. How do I do that?

Please email your Sales Representative or Account Manager.

How do I create a cohort?

Go to the Learners & Cohorts section of the Educator Portal. Select Create Cohort. Give the cohort a name, then add learners. You can do this by starting from an existing cohort or by adding from your list of individual learners.

INCORPORATING NEJM HEALER INTO YOUR CURRICULUM

How does NEJM Healer help me develop a clinical reasoning curriculum?

Assigned asynchronously or used in lectures, NEJM Healer provides a wide range of cases covering core clinical presentations and common diseases and a thorough, written introduction to clinical reasoning. NEJM Healer provides a way to practice the discreet microskills that go into clinical reasoning and provides a wide selection of detailed illness scripts and diagnostic schemas that can be used in the lecture hall or accessed by students before, during, or after completing a case to help fill in key knowledge gaps.

How can I use NEJM Healer in the classroom?

NEJM Healer can be used to support classroom instruction of clinical reasoning by having learners complete a case together in a live environment facilitated by an educator or by having learners complete a case or set of cases in advance and then conducting a live debrief session with them. The extensive expert feedback included at the end of the case can help guide you and can also facilitate discussion.

How can I use NEJM Healer as a Course Enhancement?

You can assign a range of cases in advance for students to do over a course, a year, or as they onboard and offboard from rotations. You can assign cases to the entire class and assess learners’ reasoning skills using robust performance data. You can also assign additional cases to learners as a way of ensuring exposure to certain clinical scenarios, or as remediation.

CLINICAL REASONING SUPPORT

What other materials do you have to support clinical reasoning?

See our Introduction to Diagnostic Reasoning, Clinical Reasoning Glossary, and Notes on Probabilistic Reasoning. Each of these can be accessed via the Help section of the application.

TECHNICAL SUPPORT

Can we integrate NEJM Healer into our Learning Management System?

Unfortunately, not at this time.

If you have additional questions, please contact your Account Manager or email us at healersupport@nejm.org.
